Winner of the Great Indian Developer Awards 2008

The inaugural edition of Saltmarch Media's annual Great Indian Developer Awards at Great Indian Developer Summit 2008 was the first-of-its-kind ceremony that honored winners across a range of categories in the IT Developer ecosystem.

The awards focused on trailblazing individuals, technologies, and organizations that are contributing to the evangelism, productivity and innovation excellence of the Indian developer ecosystem. The Great Indian Developer Awards highlighted product excellence, research and innovation, corporate achievements, the strongest individual efforts, and the most compelling community efforts among the entire IT developer fraternity in India.

The first edition of Great Indian Developer Awards was a highly participatory process involving stakeholders from the developer ecosystem and the high stature awards jury. The decision process was staggered across three stages. Stages I and II involved a democratic community participation with shortlists for each category and subsequent voting on those shortlists, spearheaded by the developer ecosystem. Stage III involved counting the votes and presenting the top three in each category to an esteemed panel of judges.

The judging process culminated in an exclusive ‘awards nite’ with a high stature panel felicitating the awardees. The winners are now undoubtedly set on the fast route to broad recognition for their achievements. See below the list of winners, along with pictures and citations from the jury:

Products Par Excellence

Individual Excellence

Products Par Excellence

These awards recognize the product and innovation excellence of the hundreds of software products and tools that aid developer productivity, across 12 different categories. The selection criteria applied by an international stature panel places emphasis on functionality, usability, innovation excellence, bleeding-edge quotient, and feedback from the developer ecosystem.

Development Environments – Winner from the new breed programming languages, source code editors and integrated development environments (IDEs).

Oracle JDeveloper

Jury Citation: "Eclipse and Oracle JDeveloper fought neck to neck in this category. However, the jury consensus pointed to Oracle JDeveloper 11g Preview as the more complete IDE. Whether is about JSF and Ajax development for the UI, EJB/JPA coding for the mid tier or BPEL orchestration for workflows this IDE seems to do it all. And you don't need to look for plugins unlike Eclipse -- JDeveloper comes with a number of built-in plugins and is tightly integrated to provide a better developer experience"

Sharad Medhavi, Director of Engineering, Oracle India, receiving the award on behalf of the Oracle JDeveloper team.

Design and Modeling – Winner from requirements gathering, modeling, prototyping, GUI design, analysis tools, including automatically generating code from models.

Visual Studio Team System 2008 - Architecture Edition

Jury Citation: "Visual Studio Team System 2008 - Architecture Edition had a strong competitor in MyEclipse. However, the robustness and the feature richness of the VSTS 2008 architecture edition combined with its popularity among the Indian developer workforce saw it come on tops"

Microsoft representative thanks the developer ecosystem for their overwhelming support as he accepts the award on behalf of the VSTS 2008 team

Security – Winner from tools across authentication and encryption, code analysis, firewalls, network monitoring, system enhancements, system monitoring and spam prevention.

Oracle Identity Management Suite

Jury Citation: "This was fairly simple. Oracle and Novell solutions are cross platform -- critical for an enterprise security platform. Oracle's solution is far more comprehensive and includes core security, access management, identity management, provisioning and other capabilities. In addition, given most of these capabilities came in through acquisitions of leaders it is a best of breed suite as well. These, coupled with the fact that Oracle Identity Management Suite came out on tops in the democratic voting stages, squarely positions it as the winner in the security category"

Clemens Utschig, Product Manager for SOA, Oracle Corp., receiving the award from Jesse James Garrett (President, Adaptive Path) and Dilip Thomas (CEO, Saltmarch Media)

Frameworks – Winner from across the several libraries, components, and frameworks that are part of every developer’s treasure chest.

.NET Framework 3.0

Jury Citation: "While Apache Struts has been around long and popular it is now a bit dated. Spring is a more popular framework for the mid-tier. Oracle ADF has the advantage of being based entirely on the more modern Java Server Faces standard. In all the three stages of the voting process, the .NET framework sailed through this category on its sheer merit of being a highly capable and highly regarded framework by Microsoft developers"

Siddharth Kapoor, Manager - Developer Audience Marketing, Microsoft India, accepting the award on behalf of the .NET Framework team.

Collaboration Solution – Winner from groupware, real-time conferencing and collaboration, and digital communities.

Oracle Collaboration Suite

Citation: "Oracle Collaboration Suite (OCS) offers a complete and integrated communications solution that ranges from Web conferencing and email to also calendar, content services, and mobile access. While the jury was equally split between Oracle's comprehensive suite and some of the other open source, free and Ajax based solutions, OCS came out trumps in both the voting stages"

Change & Configuration Management – Winner from across tools that track and manage software defects and enhancement requests as well as version control and change or configuration management.

Microsoft Visual Studio Team System

Citation: "Hugely popular!! VSTS simply walked away with the award in this category. Backed both by the developer ecosystem and industry, Microsoft Visual Studio Team System was a front runner since the time it was short listed as a finalist in this category"

Microsoft representative thanks the developer ecosystem for their overwhelming support as he accepts the award on behalf of the VSTS team.

Web Development – Winner from web development and deployment tools that are helping developers and designers push the boundaries of the web.

Adobe ColdFusion 8

Citation: "Adobe ColdFusion 8 emerged the winner after fighting a neck to neck battle with ASP.NET and Oracle WebCenter. As a Web development framework, ColdFusion competes against a number of technologies, but its advantage lies in its implementation, comprehensiveness, and the fact that it is many things rolled into one - presentation package, programming language, a means to produce and edit images and PDFs and much more."

Poonam Sharma, Associate Director, Editorial Communications, Saltmarch Media, receiving the award from Dr. Kasturi Rangachar, Worldwide President of IEEE, on behalf of the Adobe ColdFusion team.

Database – Winner from among the best software solution for the storage, organization, management, search and retrieval of large quantities of data.

MySQL

Citation: "Backed by a strong community and fostered and nurtured by Open Source, this champion database has today grown into a force to reckon with in the Web backend as well as enterprise database spaces. MySQL is exciting because it powers most of the popular Internet databases and has proven that an open source project can scale to be with the biggest. While Oracle 11g has exciting features and is the market leader, MySQL is making very good progress, and is expected to do well under Sun"

Naveen Asrani, Manager, Developer Marketing, India & APAC, receiving the award from Vijay Anand, Vice President Engineering, Oracle Corp.

Content Management – Winner from content creation, categorization, workflow, publishing and delivery tools.

EMC Documentum

Caption: "The robustness and workhorse nature of the tools in EMC Documentum for managing documents, records, Web content, digital assets and collaboration, coupled with its huge popularity in the Indian enterprise content and document management space, squarely places it on top of the "Content Management" category at the Great Indian Developer Awards 2008. The democratic voting stages and the high stature jury's recommendation unequivocally vouched for EMC Documentum as a leader in this category"

Harish Sidenur, Senior Manager, EMC Data Storage Systems, receiving the award from Angela Burgess, Global Strategy Head at IEEE.

Testing – the best solution developed to test the functionality of a software product or service or a segment of code. Winner from across test scripting, automation, static and defect tracking, bug tracking and documentation, functional and load testing, quality assurance planning, test-case design, white- and black-box testing and source code analysis.

Borland SilkTest

Citation: "Borland SilkTest emerged as a front runner in both the voting stages. It simply won this category on the merit of being a quality framework that looks at software quality in a very holistic view from the beginning of the development cycle to when the applications are delivered"

Ramakrishna G, Senior VP, Saltmarch Media, receiving the award on behalf of the Borland SilkTest team.

Mobile Development – Winner from across software applications, software services or infrastructure solutions that enable access to software functionality and boost the productivity and adaptability of a mobile device – including small form factor devices and/or phones. Includes operating systems, infrastructure and network solutions.

Eclipse Embedded Rich Client Platform

Citation: "Eclipse Embedded Rich Client Platform offers a generic workbench, user interface components to build rich client user interfaces, a pluggable component model for easy integration of new features and functionality, an update manager for centralized management of deployed applications, and much more. Clearly, this was the most popular finalist in this category as was evinced by its top standing in all three stages of the selection process"

Raju Joseph, Manager – Sales, Wiley, receiving the award on behalf of Wrox Press.
